Rating the CBS announcers for Vikings-Texans
Ian Eagle and Charles Davis will be in the booth, as CBS will air a second consecutive game from U.S. Bank Stadium.
Having covered the sports TV-radio beat for the Star Tribune for eight years, I found there was plenty of interest in that side of the business.
We tune into games to watch the action, but the viewing experience either can be enhanced or taken away from by those describing what is going on.
Thus, each week I’m planning to do a brief analysis of who will be in the booth to call Vikings’ game and whether the assignment is a good or bad one.
Network and broadcast team: CBS will have Vikings-Houston on Sunday with Ian Eagle and Charles Davis.
Rating the duo: 7 on a scale of 1-10.
Why that rating? Kevin Harlan and Trent Green worked the Vikings-49ers game last Sunday and now it’s Eagle and Davis. Harlan is one of the best in the business, but he’s on CBS’ No. 3 team. Eagle and Davis are second on the network’s depth chart behind Jim Nantz and Tony Romo.
Eagle is a versatile announcer who has a smooth delivery and is a pro’s pro. Davis was part of FOX’s second NFL announcing team from 2017 to 2019 before jumping to CBS in 2020.
This broadcast team might not wow you, but — for the the second consecutive week — Vikings fans can keep the sound up without being tempted to throw something at their television.
Fact that may interest only me: It will be a father-to-son announcing weekend in Minnesota. Ian’s son, Noah Eagle, who at 27 is a rising star in the business, will work the Gophers-Iowa game alongside Todd Blackledge on Saturday on NBC.
